BMW Motorcycle Headlight Bulbs FAQ and Buying Guide

You may not think much about the headlights on a BMW motorcycle, but they're critical safety features. Not only do they improve visibility in low light and at night. They also let other drivers (and riders) know where you are, and how far away.

So, there's plenty to consider when buying them for your bike online. Luckily, that's where our BMW parts store comes in; we've got the info you need to make the best possible purchasing decision.

What Types of Bulbs are Available for a BMW Motorcycle?

There are three, generally: halogen, Xenon, and LED.

Halogen Headlight Bulbs

These are relatively easy to change and, when it's time to order new ones, fairly inexpensive. However, you may have to replace them more frequently than other kinds.

Xenon Headlight Bulbs

Also called high-intensity discharge, or HID for short, these are not only brighter than your average headlamp, but they also put out less heat and last longer than other types. They can be a little more expensive, though. Plus, you may need a BMW technician's help when it's time to fix yours or put a new one in.

LED Headlight Bulbs

These are both exceptionally energy-efficient and much longer-lasting, though they may be a little costlier to change and they're not as common as other kinds.

When Should I Replace the Headlights on My BMW Bike?

As no headlight bulb is permanent, you'll have to swap out the old for the new eventually -- usually, when it weakens or goes out, or when its electronics die. That can be as little as every couple years, but it depends on the type.

What Kind of Bulb Do My BMW Motorcycle Headlamps Take?

This depends on both what it came with and what it's compatible with. Your owner's manual should have more info on the subject. When it's time to get new ones, however, be sure to order genuine OEM -- and feel free to contact a BMW motorcycle dealer if you need help with the install.

Why Buy OEM Headlight Bulbs for a BMW Bike vs. Aftermarket?

They're genuine BMW. That means top-quality, and designed specifically for your bike; you'll get the illumination you need, with fitment guaranteed. Plus, unlike some aftermarket headlight bulbs, they won't void your factory warranty.
