All About Fuel Injectors for BMW Motorcycles

While older BMW bikes feature carburetors, modern ones have fuel injectors that are responsible for delivering the ideal amount of fuel to the engine. Unlike automotive fuel injectors, which measure airflow going into the engine and react by supplying the fuel needed to counterbalance that air, motorcycle fuel injection uses what's known as an "N Alpha" system -- which requires mapped injection.

How Mapped Injection Works in a Motorcycle

The manufacturer runs an example engine at various throttle levels and rpm in order to calculate, or "map," the correct fuel mixture for each condition. The map uses the variables to determine the right amount of fuel and inform the injectors of how long they need to stay open.

If your bike uses a steel throttle cable, the cable pulls the throttles open when you turn your throttle. When you turn the grip on a modern motorbike, however, a computer detects your signal and opens the throttle to deliver the right amount of fuel.

How to Spot Faulty Motorcycle Fuel Injectors

Even the highest quality fuel injectors can eventually go bad, though. Signs of trouble include:

  • A misfiring engine
  • Engine stalls
  • Rough engine idling
  • Leaking fuel
  • Worsening fuel efficiency
  • Emissions issues
