Guide to BMW Motorrad Alternators

If it weren't for your alternator, your BMW motorcycle would be an oversized paperweight. After all, that's what produces the majority of the electricity your ride uses -- including the juice that starts it in the first place. However, motorcycle alternators are not like the ones found in cars and SUVs.

What BMW Motorrad Alternators Do

Put simply, an alternator produces power by generating alternate current (AC). This power is what charges and powers the electrical components while your motorcycle is running. A motorcycle alternator is often called a stator, which is a simpler type of alternator. It's accompanied by a regulator, or rectifier, and is usually considered part of the engine.

The stator is made of three parts: the rotor, stator, and field coil. The AC is generated when the rotor rotates around the stator as your bike runs. The stator has spokes around it, with copper coils encircling each spoke. When magnets on the rotor rotate around magnets on the stator, a current is produced. The regulator converts that AC power into direct current (DC) power that the battery can store, while also ensuring the correct amount of voltage is delivered.

How to Spot a Failing Alternator

Since the battery can't power the motorcycle on its own, you run the risk of getting stranded by the side of the road if your alternator fails. Signs include a misfiring engine, difficulty starting your motorcycle, dimming lights, and a poorly performing engine. If you experience any of these symptoms, you'll need to check your charging system to determine the source of the problem.
