When you need to change gears on your BMW motorcycle, you don't use a shift knob like those found in an automobile. Generally, instead of using your right hand to move a stick around, you use your left foot to manipulate a gear shift lever. That keeps your hands on the handlebars -- where they belong. More importantly, it allows you to keep your eyes on the road ahead -- where they belong.

How BMW Motorcycle Shift Levers Work

The way it works is simple. You slide your foot under the shift lever and lift up to move into a higher gear, with each click noting a new gear. To get back to first gear, simply tap the lever down until it won't move any further. Neutral sits right above first, with the gear progressing upward from there.

Of course, there are older bikes out there that use a jockey shifter rather than a foot-operated shift lever. With these, the shifter sits right under the seat, with the rider's hands positioned like a jockey's when they're using a riding crop. The hand shifter is directly mounted to the transmission, and protrudes just far enough to clear the belt drive or drive cover.

Genuine BMW Shift Levers Perform Best

If you're looking to replace a faulty shift lever, or just want to change yours out for something more comfortable, be sure to get the best for your model. That means shopping for genuine BMW Motorrad shift levers, since they were designed specifically for your motorcycle. There's no better source on the internet for those shifters than our online parts and accessories store, since we only offer the authentic components your manufacturer produces.
