BMW Motorrad Motorcycle Handlebars Buying Guide

The Types Available

They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from apes, mini apes, and drag bars to rabbit ears and Frisco types. There's also tracker, T, Z and low-Z, plus window, moto, and keystone. Drag and tracker handlebars for example, are for a high degree of control, while ape hanger handlebars offer looks that clearly show you're a rider. Other options yet include buckhorn and beach bars.

Some handlebars are knurled by a lathe to create a non-clip surface, while others are designed smooth. Just about every kind has either a chrome or painted gloss finish. Which set is right for your BMW motorcycle just depends on whether you're looking for style or comfort. There's a lot more to consider before you buy online, though.

Their Measurements

You have to get the right size, both for your build and for your bike. Consider the following before purchasing a set.

  • Bar diameter: the most common size after 1990 is 1 inch. Some older models, however, have bars that measure 7/8 inches in diameter, and there are thicker ones available as well. To get the right dimension from the end of the handlebar tubing, use a caliper or tape measure.
  • Overall width: it should roughly match your shoulder width, but what you need may depend on your motorcycle style. To get this dimension, measure your handlebars from end to end.
  • Rise: this is the measurement from the bottom of the handlebars to the spot where you grip the bars on top. To take it, set the bars on a flat surface and measure them from the base to the top of the end of the bar.
  • Pullback: this dimension varies according to your height. You can get it by standing your handlebars on a flat surface, against a wall, and measuring the distance between the wall and the end of the bars.
  • Center width: this measurement is taken at the bottom of the handlebars, where they clamp to the risers and before the bends in the start. Note that some models with fairings are compatible only with certain bar widths. To measure yours, lay the bars flat and measure between the bends.
  • Riser spacing width: measure between the spots where the bars clamp onto the motorcycle to get this dimension.

Other Things to Consider

One is to make sure you have throttle-by-wire or fly-by-wire notches in the handlebars, if you run an electronic throttle control. Another is to ensure that your bars have a dimpled design if you plan on recessing wires. Yet another is to get drilled bars if you need to install wiring internally.

Perhaps the most important aspect: get the genuine OEM article. What BMW makes for its motorcycle lines is designed to fit them perfectly, after all. The aftermarket can't always promise the same.
